Book Review - Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman

Review by Chiedza McNab

Noughts and Crosses is an Ok book.  It's not my favourite read though.  I enjoyed it more than Wolf Brother by Michelle Paver - That was rubbish!  But it wasn't as good as Holes by Louis Sachar.

I give it 4/5

Book Review - The Knife of Never Letting Go

Review by : Izzy

This book had a very odd beginning.  In fact the first sentence is "Poo, Todd"  Also I think Todd is a stupid name!  It also takes you awile to get use to the idea of "The Noise".  But whn you get past the odd bit and get into it - it's alright.    It is action story mostly and parts of it are quite frightening.  It is told from Todd's point of view.  Also there is an odd page where it is covered in scribble i.e. "The Noise"

I give this book 3 stars and will be reading the next one in the series.

Review by: Lizzy

This is worst book hat I never read.  I didn't read it as the first sentence is "Need a poo, Todd".  Which put me off.  The book seemed stupid and was not what I was expecting from the first few pages.  I would rather listen to pop music for hours than read this book!

Book Review - Spirit Walker

The Reading Groups Books last read was Wolf Brother by Michelle Paver.  Unfortunately not many of the girls managed to get into it although Jack did enjoy it.  Ironically Amy didn't start it but did read the book that follows on from it Spirit Walker.

This is what Amy has to say about Spirit Walker:

Spirit Walker is the second book in the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series.  It is about a boy called Torak who is living with the Raven Clan but was originally Wolf Clan.  A very good read!

Book Review - Skulduggery Plesant

A Review by Jack Judge

I give this book five stars out of five.  It's excellent because it is mysterious and scary.

There are six books in the series to read and I recommend them all.

Book Review - The Hunger Games

A Review by Lizzie Hill

I give this book five stars our of five. It was a little slow to start but if you stick with it it gets full of action!  It's an amazing book that you need to read.

The film comes out in March and I can't wait - but read the book before the film!!

Top 10 of 2010

So it is the new year which means... lots of new books! But before I get ahead of myself how about we take the opportunity to look back at last years best best fiction for 11- 16 years.

What was your favourite book of the last year? Perhaps you tried a new Author and know can't get enough of their books? Who do you think was the freshest and most brilliant emerging writer of the past year?

In our reading group for January we looked at what our favourite books of 2010 were. Here are a few of the titles that we agreed upon that ranked high in our favour...
  • Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
  • Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy
  • Twilight: Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer
  • H.I.V.E by Mark Walden
  • Cherub: The Recruit by Robert Muchamore
  • Shapeshifters: Finding the Fox by Ali Sparkes
It would be great if you want to post a comment on what fiction had you firmly fixed to the page and locked into the thickening plot. Just post a comment letting us know your fave reads and I will collate them all and put your choices into a neatly ranked table.

Book of the Month

December - The Immortals - by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell

This review is from:  G. LAWE
The Immortals is the final instalment in the Edge Chronicles, but it can be read as a stand alone book too. It's epic, packed with adventure, I love the creatures and monsters in it. Some bits are really tense and dark, and then there are moments are real humour to keep the reader guessing. The illustrations match the text perfectly and bring the world of the Edge to life. I love the way nothing is black and white in the story, there are real moral dilemmas which the characters must face and it gets you thinking about what you would do as the reader. I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it!!!
